Toggle Record, speak a test phrase, then hit playback. Hear exactly how your microphone sounds — clarity, noise, echo, and volume level all in one.

What This Online Mic Test Checks

More detailed than any other free microphone test tool available online.

Microphone Detection

Instantly detects all microphones connected to your computer or phone — built-in laptop mics, USB headsets, Bluetooth earbuds, webcam mics, gaming headsets, and professional audio interfaces. Filter by device type to find exactly the mic you want to test.

Real-Time Frequency Spectrum

The live frequency visualizer shows which audio frequencies your mic is capturing — from deep bass (low end) to bright treble (high end). A healthy microphone shows balanced activity across the spectrum when you speak at normal volume.

Volume Level & Peak Tracking

The input level meter tracks your real-time volume percentage with a color-coded bar (green → yellow → red). The peak tracker records the highest signal level reached during your test, helping you identify if your mic is too quiet or causing clipping distortion.

Audio Quality Metrics

Displays your microphone's sample rate (Hz), channel count (mono or stereo), and estimated latency (ms). These technical specs tell you whether your mic is operating at full quality or being limited by driver settings, Bluetooth compression, or USB bandwidth.

Privacy-First Design

This free microphone test never records, uploads, or stores your audio. All processing happens inside your browser using the Web Audio API. No account, no email, no tracking. Your voice is analyzed locally and discarded the moment you stop — completely private.

Audio Record & Playback

The optional Record feature lets you capture a short audio clip and play it back instantly inside your browser. No files are saved to your computer automatically. This is the single best way to hear exactly how your microphone sounds to others on calls and meetings.

Works in Every Browser

Full browser-based mic test — no extensions, no plugins, no Flash. Just open and test.

Fix Common Microphone Problems

If your online mic test fails, these are the most common causes and fixes.

Fix 01

Mic Not Detected at All

Click the Refresh button next to the device selector. If still missing, check that the mic is physically connected. On Windows, open Device Manager and look for disabled audio input devices.

Fix 02

Browser Permission Blocked

Click the padlock icon in your browser address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and refresh the page. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox all require explicit permission for each website.

Fix 03

No Signal on Volume Meter

Your mic may be muted in Windows or macOS sound settings. Check system input volume is not at zero. On Windows, right-click the speaker icon → Sound Settings → Input and increase the mic level.

Fix 04

Very Quiet or Weak Signal

Enable Gain Boost ×2 in the test options above. Also check Windows microphone boost settings: Sound Settings → Microphone Properties → Levels → Microphone Boost (+10 to +30 dB).

Fix 05

Echo or Feedback Noise

Enable Echo Cancellation in the test options. If testing with speakers, use headphones instead to prevent the microphone from picking up speaker output. Also lower speaker volume during the test.

Fix 06

Windows Privacy Setting Blocked

Go to Windows Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Make sure "Microphone access" is On, "Let apps access your microphone" is On, and "Let desktop apps access your microphone" is also On.

Fix 07

Bluetooth Mic Sounds Bad

Bluetooth microphones often switch to lower quality HFP (Hands-Free Profile) mode when used as input. Ensure your Bluetooth headset is connected as both input and output. Wired USB headsets always offer better quality.

Fix 08

Outdated Audio Drivers

Open Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio device, and select Update driver. Outdated Realtek, IDT, or manufacturer drivers cause intermittent mic failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this free online microphone test tool.

Is this online microphone test completely free? +
Yes — this is a 100% free online microphone test with no hidden fees, no subscription plans, and no premium version. Every feature including live frequency analysis, peak tracking, audio recording, playback, and all toggle options is completely free. There is no registration, no email required, and no account to create. You can use this tool unlimited times at zero cost.
Do I need to download anything to test my microphone online? +
No downloads are required whatsoever. This is a fully browser-based microphone test that runs entirely inside your web browser using the built-in Web Audio API. No software, no app, no plugin, no Flash, no Java, and no browser extension is needed. Simply open the page and click Start — the entire test runs in your browser window.
Why is my microphone not working in the browser test? +
The most common reasons are: (1) browser microphone permission is blocked — click the padlock in your address bar and set Microphone to Allow; (2) wrong default input device selected — use the device dropdown to choose the correct mic; (3) Windows microphone privacy blocked — check Settings → Privacy → Microphone; (4) mic is muted in system sound settings; (5) outdated audio drivers. Enable Gain Boost in the options if your mic is detected but the signal is very low.
Is my audio recorded or sent to a server? +
No. All audio processing happens 100% locally inside your browser. The Web Audio API analyzes your microphone signal in real time on your own device — no audio data is ever transmitted, uploaded, recorded on a server, or stored anywhere. The optional Record feature saves a temporary clip only in your browser's local memory, and it is deleted the moment you close the tab or refresh the page. Your privacy is fully protected.
How do I test my microphone on Windows 11? +
On Windows 11, open this page in Chrome or Edge, click Start Mic Test, and allow microphone access when prompted. If it works here, your mic hardware is functioning correctly. To confirm default mic settings in Windows 11: go to Settings → System → Sound, scroll to Input, and verify your microphone shows activity on the volume bar when you speak. Also check Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone to ensure apps are permitted to access it.
Can I test my microphone on iPhone or Android? +
Yes. This online microphone test works on iPhone and Android phones. On iPhone, open the page in Safari and allow microphone permission when asked. On Android, open in Chrome and allow mic access. You can test your phone's built-in microphone, connected wired earphones with a mic, or Bluetooth headsets. The full frequency visualizer and recording feature work on mobile devices as well.
What is a good microphone level percentage for calls and meetings? +
For video calls, online meetings, podcasting, and streaming, a good target is 40–75% input level when speaking at normal conversational volume. If your level stays below 20%, your mic is too quiet — enable Gain Boost or increase the input gain in your system sound settings. If your level consistently hits 90–100%, you risk audio clipping and distortion — move slightly further from the mic or reduce the input gain level in your OS sound settings.
Does this tool work for Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams mic testing? +
Yes. This free online microphone test is perfect for checking your mic before any video conferencing platform — Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Webex, Discord, and more. If your microphone passes this test with a clear signal, it will work in any video call application. The test uses the same Web Audio API that all browser-based conferencing tools rely on, making it a direct real-world indicator of call quality.
What does the frequency spectrum visualizer show? +
The frequency spectrum visualizer (the bar chart that reacts to your voice) shows the strength of different audio frequencies your microphone is capturing in real time. Bars on the left represent low bass frequencies, bars in the middle represent mid-range speech frequencies, and bars on the right represent high treble frequencies. When you speak, you should see a cluster of bars lighting up in the mid-range (200Hz–3kHz), which is the core range of the human voice. A complete lack of movement means no signal is being detected.
Why is this microphone test better than other free tools online? +
Most free online mic tests only show a single volume bar and nothing else. This tool provides a complete audio analysis suite: real-time frequency spectrum visualization, 5-point microphone health report, peak level tracking, sample rate and latency metrics, 9 configurable test options (noise suppression, echo cancellation, auto gain control, gain boost, mono mode, record, playback, echo mode, and visualizer toggle), 9 device type filters, multi-device support, and full mobile compatibility — all free, with no registration, no download, and no ads. It is the most feature-complete free online microphone test available.
